Scoop's Summer Outdoor Book Sale.

Dave Richey shows off just a few of the fishing-hunting books he sells.

OK, fishing-hunting book buyers. Gather round. Scoop's Books, here on my website, is offering a 10 percent summer special off the listed price through the end of August, 2011. Buyers can take an extra 10 percent off the low figure charged for all the books and magazines I offer.

Fishing. Hunting. Bows and firearms. Salmon and Trout. Muskie and wild turkey. All of these topics and many others are covered in Scoops Books, and all are offered at a fair price. When my blog comes up, scroll down a bit, and you'll find Scoop's Books on the right. Click on it, and remember to check first with me by email to see if that book is still available before sending money. Don't forget: Check Ahead with me.

One nice thing about buying or selling fishing and hunting books is you get to meet some very nice people. Many are well educated, well-spoken, and fun to talk with in person, on the phone or by e-mail.

Many fishing-hunting books are being offered at fair price & a discount.

A man I know was looking for Robert Traver's Anatomy Of A Fisherman book, and I had a spare signed copy at the time but no longer have one. It was signed by Traver many years ago, and he bought it. He dropped a hint that he wanted to buy copies of Traver's Trout Magic and Trout Madness, and we came to terms on those key fishing books as well.

During out conversation I learned that he knew Bob Summers, a bamboo fly rod maker of wide acclaim that lives near Traverse City, and since Bob and I are friends, the book-buyer felt comfortable with me and our deal.

I've written 25 books on hunting and fishing, and still have some mint signed copies of my books. They are only a small part of my inventory.

Another guy once wanted to buy a copy of the late Ernie Schwiebert's book Matching The Hatch. He wanted to be sure that the signature was truly that of Ernie, and Ernie and I had been speakers at the Michigan Fly Fishing Expo many years ago, and I took the book with me. Ernie signed it, and that was good enough for that book buyer.

He returned to buy another book, and we too became friends. Another man, a charterboat skipper from Frankfort, also taught school and he gave me a hard-luck story about a book he had read and enjoyed as a child. He wanted to share it with his class but couldn't find it.

I spent five minutes searching for the title, and could have made a few bucks by ordering and paying for it, and then adding a small fee for my time. I was busy with other things at the moment, and i sent him the   e-mail address, and he bought the book. He now comments frequently on my weblog, and I'll probably hear from him again soon.

Most good books appreciate 10-15 percent yearly. Choose wisely or ask for help.

Books are meaningless to some, but most avid anglers and hunters know that reading good books is a great way to learn new fishing or hunting techniques. Those who don't read, and never stay up to speed on the latest methods, are soon left behind. It's sad but true.

Another man called one day, needed a certain book that would have to be ordered, and I handled the deal. We'd been talking friends for many years, and though I had $25 wrapped up in the book for the two weeks it took for the seller to ship it to me, we settled up and he has done me some favors.

Favors are nice but it takes money to pay for a website, and the way I keep from having to charge readers for my columns and features, is to sell a few books. The business isn't fast by any stretch of the imagination, but I take pride in what I do and how I do it.I'll have about 500 books for sale within two weeks.

Look over my list, and I often can find books for customers that I don't have.

One man kept looking for a certain book, couldn't find it, and eventually came to me. We've traded countless e-mails about muskie fishing, and all of this has come about because I found a few very difficult muskie titles for him. Did I make a few bucks? Sure, but helping my readers find the precise book they want or need is enjoyable. And besides, all I have to do is get to Wisconsin and he'll take me muskie fishing.

Anyone who reads, and studies books on the latest fishing or hunting techniques, or prefers the older classic titles, should check Scoop's Books. Look for the listing on my Home Page, click on the highlighted name, and  start looking at my books for sale. I'll probably add another 100 books over the next two weeks.

I want to buy your fishing & hunting books.

For me to attempt to sell books, I must buy books. Sadly, elderly folks pass away and a bunch of fishing and hunting books are left behind. Many people donate them to Goodwill, but a quick e-mail to me at  <dave@daverichey.com> will generate some interest, especially if you give me the author's name and book title and a ballpark guess as to the book's condition. A Dust Jacket can add to the value.

I'm always looking for fishing and hunting titles. Books can be found in  attics, barns, basements, garages, storage units, etc. If you find a bunch of books, it won't hurt to drop me an e-mail. I don't buy everything offered, and wouldn't because many such books are common. Common books, sad to say, have little or no value. However, if a book is scarce, and it's one I can use, I'll buy it and pay good money for what I need.

I know that some people don't care about books, but I do, and I am a endlessly in love with good titles. And the nice thing is that buying and selling books leads to quality friendships, and that may be the biggest benefit of all.
